What is an art doll? These creations are not so easily defined. Most of them resemble the human form, if only slightly. They may not have arms or legs, or they may have many. They may not have faces; they might have mirrors instead or masks or stones or a found object that resembles a face. There are no rules, just imagination. That is why a better description may be "figurative sculpture" which is what I prefer to call them.

I like to work in series. Most of my figures are a combination of polymer clay and cloth on a wire armature, but I do make all-cloth dolls as well. I also like to pose them, either on chairs, which I collect or on cushions.

SERIES I

Don't They Know
I'm Only 15 on the Inside?

This series consists of aging flower children now experiencing the joys of grand motherhood while remaining herself and also deals with today's aging woman, but in a more serious vein. I started these dolls when I became a grandmother myself for the first time. There is a conflict with the outward changes of the body and the internal thoughts, ideas and feelings.

Women of Power

These are both mythical creatures; or well known historical figures like Georgia O'Keefe.

Cloth Dolls

Faerie Grandmothers

The Faerie Grandmother's bodies and wings are made of vintage fabrics and linens. Polymer clay faces are made from a mold. Each one has a loop on the back for displaying on a wall or bedpost or drawer pull. They come with a small description of the power of the grandmother. They are 14"high.

Taliswomen

There are two types of tiny Taliswoman dolls. The first are made of fabric with clay faces and many embellishments, shells, beads, raffia and found objects. They have hanging loops on the back.

The second kind are made of found wooden pieces with a clay head attached. The wood has been collaged with papers and embellished with beads and charms.

Mirrored faces

These cloth dolls are 12". They are made of many different types of fabric and each have a mirror instead of a face. Some people like to use them as "affirmation" dolls. Looking into their own face as the doll's face.

Pocketed dolls

These 8" dolls have hand-painted faces, cloth bodies with a pocket in front for storing little "treasures" or business cards, etc. Bodies have pellet-filled bases to sit easily.
